Excel 2011 for Mac - suddenly not opening frequently use XLS files I am using Mac 10.8.4 and Excel 2011 (version 14.3.9) with no recent upgrading that I recall. This made it work before the update (albeit I tried it late last night!) I have installed the update and it seems to be working, which is fabulous! Also, I found it helpful to repair the disk permissions not once, but twice straight after each other. If that works, it may fix the problem for you. Let’s take the new error message at face value and go with the idea that your installation of Office did not update properly. If the problem had been preference files, your Excel files would have opened normally in the new user account.
